    Identification of Motion Controllers In Human Standing And Walking

    The method of trajectory optimization with direct collocation has the potential to extract generalized and realistic motion controllers from long duration movement data without requiring extensive measurement equipment. Knowing motion controllers not only can improve clinic assessments on locomotor disabilities, but also can inspire the control of powered exoskeletons and prostheses for better performance. Three aims were included in this dissertation. Aim 1 was to apply and validate the trajectory optimization for identification of the postural controllers in standing balance. The trajectory optimization approach was first validated on the simulated standing balance data and demonstrated that it can extract the correct postural control parameters. Then, six types of postural feedback controllers, from simple linear to complex nonlinear, were identified on six young adults’ motion data that was collected in a standing balance experiment. Results indicated that nonlinear controllers with multiple time delay paths can best explain their balance motions. A stochastic trajectory optimization approach was proposed that can help finding practically stable controllers in the identification process. Aim 2 focused on the foot placement control in walking. Foot placement controllers were successfully identified through the trajectory optimization method on nine young adults’ perturbed walking motions. It was shown that a linear controller with pelvis position and velocity feedback, suggested by the linear inverted pendulum model, was not sufficient to explain their foot placement among multiple walking speeds. Nonlinear controllers or more feedback signals, such as pelvis acceleration, are needed. Foot placement control was applied on a powered leg exoskeleton to control its legs’ swing motion. Two healthy participants were able to achieve stable walking with the controlled exoskeleton. v Results suggested that the foot placement controller helped decelerate the swing motion at late swing. In Aim 3, the trajectory optimization method was used to identify joint impedance properties in walking. Results of the synthetic study showed that relatively close impedance parameters can be identified. Then, a preliminary study was done to identify the ankle joint impedance properties of two participants at two walking speeds. The identified impedance properties were close to previous studies and consistent between different participants and walking speeds

    Acceleration of Histogram-Based Contrast Enhancement via Selective Downsampling

    In this paper, we propose a general framework to accelerate the universal histogram-based image contrast enhancement (CE) algorithms. Both spatial and gray-level selective down- sampling of digital images are adopted to decrease computational cost, while the visual quality of enhanced images is still preserved and without apparent degradation. Mapping function calibration is novelly proposed to reconstruct the pixel mapping on the gray levels missed by downsampling. As two case studies, accelerations of histogram equalization (HE) and the state-of-the-art global CE algorithm, i.e., spatial mutual information and PageRank (SMIRANK), are presented detailedly. Both quantitative and qualitative assessment results have verified the effectiveness of our proposed CE acceleration framework. In typical tests, computational efficiencies of HE and SMIRANK have been speeded up by about 3.9 and 13.5 times, respectively.Comment: accepted by IET Image Processin

    Contrast Enhancement of Brightness-Distorted Images by Improved Adaptive Gamma Correction

    As an efficient image contrast enhancement (CE) tool, adaptive gamma correction (AGC) was previously proposed by relating gamma parameter with cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the pixel gray levels within an image. ACG deals well with most dimmed images, but fails for globally bright images and the dimmed images with local bright regions. Such two categories of brightness-distorted images are universal in real scenarios, such as improper exposure and white object regions. In order to attenuate such deficiencies, here we propose an improved AGC algorithm. The novel strategy of negative images is used to realize CE of the bright images, and the gamma correction modulated by truncated CDF is employed to enhance the dimmed ones. As such, local over-enhancement and structure distortion can be alleviated. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results show that our proposed method yields consistently good CE results

    Real-Time Gate Reassignment Based on Flight Delay Feature in Hub Airport

    Appropriate gate reassignment is crucially important in efficiency improvement on airport sources and service quality of travelers. The paper divides delay flight into certain delay time flight and uncertain delay time flight based on flight delay feature. The main objective functions of model are to minimize the disturbance led by gate reassignment in the case of certain delay time flight and uncertain delay time flight, respectively. Another objective function of model is to build penalty function when the gate reassignment of certain delay time flight influences uncertain delay time flight. Ant colony algorithm (ACO) is presented to simulate and verify the effectiveness of the model. The comparison between simulation result and artificial assignment shows that the result coming from ACO is obvious prior to the result coming from artificial assignment. The maximum disturbance of gate assignment is decreased by 13.64%, and the operation time of ACO is 118 s. The results show that the strategy of gate reassignment is feasible and effective

    Reliability Analysis of Complex Systems with Failure Propagation

    Failure propagation is a critical factor for the reliability and safety of complex systems. To recognise and identify failure propagation of systems, a deep fusion model based on deep belief network (DBN) and Bayesian structural equation model (BSEM) is proposed. The deep belief network is applied to extract features between status monitoring data and the performance degradation in different failure components. To calculate the path weight of failure propagation, the Bayesian structural equation model is proposed to study the relationship among different fault modes. After getting the performance degradation of each fault through DBN and calculating the path weight of fault propagation by BSEM, it is available to get the overall reliability of the system. The aircraft landing gear system with 19 fault patterns is selected to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed deep fusion model. The results demonstrate that the overall reliability of the system can be obtained by analysing the fault propagation of multiple fault patterns, and the proposed model has a lower deviation than traditional back propagation neural network

    High Range Resolution Profile Construction Exploiting Modified Fractional Fourier Transformation

    This paper addresses the discrimination of closely spaced high speed group targets with radar transmitting linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulses. The high speed target motion leads to range migration and target dispersion and thereby the discriminating capability of the high range resolution profile (HRRP) deteriorating significantly. An effective processing approach composed of stretch processing (SP), modified fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is proposed to deal with this problem. Firstly, SP is adopted to transform the received LFM with Doppler distortions into narrow band LFM signals. Secondly, based on the two-dimensional range/velocity plane constructed by the modified FrFT, the velocity of the high speed group target is estimated and compensated with just one single pulse. After the compensation of range migration and target dispersion simultaneously, the resolution of the HRRP achieved by single pulse transmission improves significantly in the high speed group targets scenarios. Finally, MUSIC algorithm with superresolution capability is utilized to make a more explicit discrimination between the scatterers in comparison with the conventional SP method. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme
